HULA DOGS: TRAINING SCHOOL

Nugget's Training Diary

WEEK ONE

Nuggets has taken very well to the clicker (thinks with his stomach this dog!).

He has a very good sit and down command (although we need to point a finger to the ground at the moment). I will be working on him understanding the 'word' and not the hand signal.

His touch recall is very good and he will recall to the command from a distance.  This will help when anyone is trying to distract him from other objects/people/dogs or furry rabbits which he does want to chase. Starting working on his stay which is totally new to him.

Overall he is a clever dog who is quick to pick up new commands. I also think someone in his past has put quite a bit of work into training the basics.

WEEK TWO

What a good boy he was this week, we worked on his down and I am happy to say he now understand the word and drops into the position beautifully (so much nicer for my back).

We then went on to work on his leave as he does tend to want to play tug with his toys and not give them up. Started on a more easier leave which was with food, holding food in one hand and asking him to leave and back off, he would then get a treat from the other hand or a treat thrown to him. From there I started to put food down on the ground and asked for the leave and by the end of the lesson I could place a bit of chicken on his paw and he would leave it until I gave him the 'take it' command.

Next week we are going to work on the toy release which he finds much harder.

*** UPDATE ***

We are delighted to announce that Nuggets has now found a new permanent home.
